PIXAR COMES TO HAZELWOOD24th Apr 2012
PIXAR COMES TO HAZELWOOD
Last month Hazelwood was honoured to welcome Pixar Animator Tom Miller who talked about his work to our Moving Image Arts students. Tom has worked as a set artist and technical director on some of their most famous films including Cars and Toy Story 3.
For those eager to enter the film industry Tom told how he first started working with Pixar, designing the jellyfish for Finding Nemo. Later he became more involved in set and background design for films such as The Incredibles. He showed how much time and effort goes into creating even the smallest scene. Such attention to detail impressed everyone in the audience and after a lively question and answer session the students promised to rewatch the movies now that they know how such images are created for the big screen.

Most importantly they were awarded 1st place and now progress to the Northern Grand Final, representing Northern Ireland in Grimsby on Thursday 21st June, 2012.
Kathryn Sheppard, a member of the PE department was also presented with a framed award which represents her 10 year involvement and commitment to the Be Your Best Foundation Rock Challenge Competition.
The day itself was filled with fun and excitement for all teams involved as approximately 400 students representing 5 different schools took part in a morning warm up with the Rock Challenge crew. Furthermore teachers and staff were pulled onto stage to perform and see who was the least co-ordinated J
During the day each school had an opportunity to rehearse their performance which gave everyone a feel for the stage and the sheer scale of the auditorium. This helped to settle a few nerves for the big night ahead!
Hazelwood were scheduled last in the running order, we were unsure if this was a benefit or a disadvantage as it created an air of apprehension in the dressing rooms. However at 20:10pm we were called to side stage where Amy Garner confidently introduced our performance. Stage crew were headed up by Ricky Reid who had his team rehearsed to perfection in setting up within the 4 minute timeframe, they even had time throughout the performance for a few dance moves behind the scenes! As the finale started cheers and roars came from the auditorium to the response of our flashing bracelets and when the team struck their finishing poses, the cheering was tremendous which put a smile on everyone’s face reassuring them that they had completed a show stopping performance!
Spokespersons Lauren Bell, Danielle Brown, Lyndsey and Ashleigh Fryers answered questions with confidence and explained the efforts which the team had gone to over the course of 8 months. They explained the importance of teamwork throughout all the year groups in our school and how self esteem of each member of the group was enhanced. Furthermore they highlighted the link with our local community including parents, sponsors and all fundraising activities which helped Hazelwood Integrated College in one of its goals in maintaining and increasing awareness in the wider community.
Hazelwood is so proud of their achievement and their students who should be commended for their effort, attitude, dedication and commitment over the past 8 months. No matter what the result in the Grand Final in England Rock Challenge has already given us the opportunity to reflect on what has been an outstanding achievement. Personal thanks must go to all staff who have been involved and dedicated their time to Rock Challenge, furthermore our thanks extends to all teachers and administration staff who have contributed so much to the schools success.

Chloe's Tayto Trip29th Mar 2012
Tayto Trip
We got out of class at 12:00pm to eat our lunch and we left school at 12:20pm. It took us about 50 minutes to get to the Tayto Factory in Tandragee.
When we arrived at Tayto we sat at the seated area and waited for our instructions. Before we went into the factory we had to take off al jewellery and make sure nothing was in our pockets. We also had to put on plastic aprons and hair nets. Here we learned that the factory was started in 1955 and is owned by Thomas Hutchinson. They produce crisps and Corn snacks for Tescos, Sainsburys, Spar, Centra and other stores worldwide. After we were instructed we got to meet Pat Tayto, Tayto’s Mascot, and get pictures with him.
Next we walked through to the potato store which was quite dark and stored potatoes. It had vents in the ground so that the air could get into the potatoes. It was full of “1 tonne boxes” which held a tonne of potatoes. It had a cover at the front which kept the cold in and the heat out.
In the main part of the factory the potatoes are cleaned in cold water first to remove any dirt and then in warm water to soften them up. Next they take the starch out of the potatoes and sell it to glue factories. After this they are scraped, not peeled. They are then sliced at a 1.2mm thickness and put into a giant fryer to be cooked. Tayto recycle their water which saves them up to £100,000 every year and they sell the potato skins back to farmers for animal feed. Next they add the flavouring but before they did we got to taste a bowl of unflavoured crisps which were still warm!
The crisps are packaged using a machine which lets a certain amount of crisps into each bag and closes it at each end using heat. For multipacks the crisps which have just been put into packages go through a big tube and go through the same cycle only in a bigger bag and instead of single crisps going in, multipacks go in.
To make the corn snacks the corn is imported from Argentina. Once they are cut and shaped they are baked at 180 degrees. The flavouring comes in powder form so it is added to oil and sprayed onto the corn snacks.
After our tour we went back to the seated area where we all got a free 6 pack of crisps and tasted some of Tayto’s new flavours like the Titanic flavour. We then all said thank you to our tour guide and left for Hazelwood again. It was a great day for everyone.

Year 9 Football Team Win Tournament21st Mar 2012
The Drought is over!
It has been a long time since a male Hazelwood football team has produced the goods on the pitch but I am delighted to report that the Year 9 footballers have finally put us back where we belong!
It was with great trepidation that I accepted Carol’s invite to compete in the ‘Battle of the Boards’ tournament at the beginning of September. I had never met the team let alone had a training session with them. My fears were quickly allayed as I realised that this group of players had everything needed to be a competitive football team-hunger, determination, sportsmanship and most importantly bucket loads of talent!
I was now officially excited about this football team and as we drove to Stormont Playing Fields on Monday 24th October there was a real feeling of destiny on our shoulders.
The tournament consisted of ten schools from all around Northern Ireland. As we got the fixtures it dawned on us all that to win this was not going to be easy. Newtownabbey High, Antrim Grammar, St.Colman’s Newry, Coleraine Inst, Downshire among others stood in our way.
The players knew what they had to do and more importantly listened to their coaches when tactical advice was needed to be taken on board. It quickly became clear to us all that the strongest teams in the competition were Downshire, Newtownabbey and Coleraine and it was no surprise that these three teams along with ourselves made up the semi-final line-up.
We were drawn against Coleraine Inst in the semi final. At the final whistle the score was four a piece so our fate lay in the hands of the dreaded penalty shoot-out. We had every faith in our keeper (Michael Law) and he did not disappoint us by producing two wonderful penalty saves to send the ‘Wood’ through to the final to face a very strong Downshire team.
Downshire had already beaten us 3-2 in the group stages but as was the case for all the games we had missed a plethora of chances (no names Dan Reynolds!!). I informed the boys that if we relax in front of goal then we will bring the cup back to Graymount House. Our skipper (Mark Smith) rallied the boys with a John Terry-esque speech before the kick-off and we were ready-15 minutes to bring the silverware back to North Belfast!
Throughout the tournament we had our weapon of mass destruction…that is Dylan Davison’s left foot. He did not disappoint in the final and was inspirational in leading the boys to a convincing 7-3 victory. The final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations amongst all of the team. We had done it!! The trophy was heading back along the Shore Road and up the Whitewell! Here’s hoping the Crues and the Reds from Solitude take a leaf out of our book and start winning some trophies for this part of Belfast.
Mark Smith hoisted the trophy high above his head and Hazelwood College were crowned ‘Battle of the Boards’ Champions 2011.
Dylan Davison was crowned top goalscorer for the whole tournament.
This team deserve all the credit that will come their way and I hope they go from strength to strength. If they keep the same attitude and commitment I am sure they will have many more successes in the years to come.
The players who were triumphant were as follows Michael Law, Mark Smith, Nathan McAlinden, Stephen McConnell, Dan Reynolds, Ben Fee, Dylan Davison and Matty Beggs.
The team would like to thank Gareth (T.A) for his support at the tournament and Carol for organising our participation in the event.
Pele coined the phrase ‘The Beautiful Game’ and on days like this it truly is……well done boys from all of the students and staff of Hazelwood College.
