History is the study of the past, and we aim to find out about:

  • People: Not just famous people such as Kings and Queens, but also ordinary people like peasants and workers. Were their lives like ours of different? What made them tick?
  • Events: National events like invasions, battles, and Wars and local events like the Norman invasion of Ulster and the plantation.
  • Change: What has changed over the centuries and why?

History contributes to the moral and ethical development of students and to their awareness of citizenship, perhaps more than any other subject in the curriculum. As an active citizen it is necessary to be well-informed about the past, to enable responsible decision making in the future. A successful Historian must be able to understand and respect different points of view, forging an essential "life skill" which helps to combat bigotry and intolerance. At Hazelwood we encourage students to think for themselves, by giving them the tools required to evaluate a range of evidence. We promote creativity; self-management, team work, the ability to problem solve and make decisions through the study of various Historical periods and scenarios.

History at Hazelwood is relevant, interesting and fun!
