I am honoured to become the fourth Principal of Hazelwood Integrated College and returning to the city where I was born. A school like Hazelwood says how much Belfast has changed in the last fifty years.
As a former principal and teacher of History, Politics and Religious Education at St. Cecilia’s College in Londonderry, I am trading the view of the seventeenth century walls for a view of Harland and Wolff and I realise that Hazelwood College is not just a school with a view, but a school with an outlook on what is the very best for the future of Northern Ireland.
The visible sign of reconciliation is in our school crest and the journey which has been made by Hazelwood is a lesson to anyone in leadership to have the vision and stick to it and not bow down under a weight of negativity. I pay tribute to my predecessors as well as governors, parents and pupils past and present and I look forward to carrying on the proud traditions of our College and making sure it meets the challenges of today in preparing our young people for their future. I look forward to serving the Hazelwood Community.
In the years to come I hope you will see that my actions will speak louder than my words.
Kathleen Gormley, Principal
